If you're doing a little research and wondering why shower kits can range so drastically in price, consider the following things that all affect product pricing and quality:
- What is the product made of? Flimsy acrylic shower surrounds from Re-Bath, Bath Planet and other BCI dealers are paper thin and have a very hollow feel to them. Sometimes they are installed over existing tile walls for a quick cosmetic update, but if there are any issues behind the walls you'll never know until it's too late. These thin shower liners are not structurally able to support grab bars or shower seats, and cost just as much to install as other more durable products ($15,000 and up, even with their half-off installation "discounts"). A one day installation doesn't allow for permits or inspections which are required any time there is a change to the plumbing fixtures in a shower.
- What are the sizes of the materials being used? Single-piece shower and tub surrounds can be difficult to move through small 24" bathroom doorways and winding staircases, even if they are made out of lightweight acrylic materials. BestBath offers standard, semi-custom and full custom built units that can ship in multi-piece kits, making the components easier to maneuver around tight corners and through small bathroom spaces.
- How do solid surface wall systems like BestBath compare to tile showers? Tile showers, when done correctly, will have layers and layers of structure and waterproofing installed underneath the pretty finished tile product we see on the surface. During a remodel, the wet area (tub or shower) will be taken down to the studs and built back out using code compliant products and techniques. The materials for a tile shower installation may be cheaper up front, but all the labor that goes into a proper installation adds up on the back end. BestBath shower systems are just that- a complete system. They've fused fiberglass backing for support to marine-grade plywood for structural strength with composite laminate smooth surface walls for waterproofing and a scratch resistant, antimicrobial polyester gel-coat finish all into one single wall panel! This increases the materials costs, but makes installation a breeze because each piece gets secured directly into the studs and subfloor right out of the crate.
